Kindness from Within: How Self-Compassion Increases Your Motivation

We live in an achievement driven society. We’re constantly being pushed to do more, get more, win medals, get awards etc., all in the hopes that once we achieve these external markers of success we’ll gain the respect and recognition of our peers.

Many of us believe that in order to compete in a society that demands so much of us, we have to push ourselves. Unfortunately, sometimes “pushing ourselves” sounds like this:

“Breaks are for winners.”

“I’m just crap at this. It won’t work”

“There’s nothing really special about me.”

All this type of language does is activate our very loud-mouth inner-critic. So instead of pushing ourselves we end up punishing ourselves — feeling a lot worse and less motivated in the process.

So what’s the answer to all this? How do we make the shift from punishing ourselves to pushing ourselves?

The answer to that is showing ourselves some self compassion.

Self-compassion is about turning inward to our own suffering and treating ourselves with kindness when we do, that is, in the same way our best friend would.

Check out the video below, and you’ll learn more about:

Our best fuel for motivation is self-compassion. The kinder we are to ourselves the more fulfilled we’ll feel — a deep sense of fulfillment that is not dependent on external validation.

Community is important and we’d love to hear from you!
